What is Ames® Safe-T-Deck® Skid Resistant Exterior Deck Coating?
Preserve and protect your deck with Ames® Safe-T-Deck® Granulated non-slip coating, slip resistant. It is a strongly adhesive acrylic latex that is easy to apply and creates a non-slip granulated surface once dry making it great for areas where people are walking. The slip-resistant deck coating is elastomeric and will resist cracking and peeling, as well as environmentally friendly and American made. This product comes in six different colors to match your home.
Where to Use:
• Roof Decks
• Wheelchair Ramps
• Boat Decks
Paint brush and 3/8” to 1/2” nap roller with a long handle and paint tray. For Roof Deck application you may need a push broom, Ames® Seam Tape, Ames® Roof Fabric and scissors.
Ready to use – no mixing required. Powerwash and clean the surface. Remove all loose paint, dirt, oil and grease leaving surface clean and completely dry. Do not use any soaps, detergents, or cleaners whatsoever to clean any deck surface. Always run a test patch first in an inconspicuous area to ensure that proper adhesion and drying occurs and the product works to your satisfaction. For plywood and concrete all small cracks and joints (1/8″ or less) should be caulked with a non-silicone, paintable caulk or Ames® Blue Max® Trowel Grade coating and filler. For larger cracks on concrete (1/8″ or larger) fill with a cementitious filler. For larger cracks on plywood (1/8″ or larger) fill with a sandable filler. Make sure surface is as smooth as possible. For good adhesion Ames® Super Primer™ may be used as a base coat for badly deteriorated wood decks and mandatory for concrete decks or walkways. For best results and adhesion, it is always best to apply over a bare surface with no paint or residue of any kind.
Application by surface type:
Dimensional Lumber Decks:
For best results, it is best to sand the surface completely and get down to bare wood, then powerwash and clean the surface. Make sure it is completely dry before proceeding. if you cannot sand the entire deck, then try to sand any areas that have loose material or are dirty and get down to bare wood. After sanding, powerwash away any excess dust or debris and make sure it is completely dry. Prime entire deck with one coat of Ames® Super Primer™ and allow to dry clear (1 gallon per 200 sq. ft. per coat). Once dry and completely clear, (about 30-60 minutes) then top coat with one or two coats of Safe-T-Deck® slip-resistant deck coating and allow proper drying between coats (minimum of 25 hours between coats). For decks with slats, a small paint brush may be used for coating between slats.
Plywood Roof Decks:
(decks above living areas) After deck preparation you may use Ames® Peel & Stick™ Seam Tape or Contouring Roof Fabric™ on all surfaces with joints, cracks, flashings or where two unlike surfaces come together. Seam tape is optional and is added in order to provide additional strength and reinforcement. Ames® Seam Tape (PS250) two inch wide by 50 feet or (PS450) four inch wide, (PS650) six inch wide is ideal for plywood, roof decks and other smooth surfaces.
NOTE: The Peel & Stick™ Seam Tape may show a slight bump and radiate through coating. Also, for the Seam Tape and Fabric to work properly, it must be a smooth surface (no rough or uneven surfaces!)
Step one – Pour out a liberal amount (1 gal. / 100 sq ft. per coat) of Ames® Elasto-Barrier™ onto the surface until smooth (additional coats may be required until smooth). You may use a push broom or roller to spread the coating out in a path slightly wider than the Roof Fabric (42” by 75 feet) in step 3.
Step two – Roll or embed Ames® Contouring Roof Fabric™ into the wet coating using the push broom or roller until the coating comes through the fabric and totally saturates it. This is best done by laying the fabric down and pushing it forward into the wet coating with the push broom or roller while the excess coating comes up through the fabric and totally saturates it. Avoid folds and wrinkles. Use a liberal amount of coating. The fabric will absorb almost two gallons per 100 square feet during this application.
Step three – With the roller or push broom, pull the excess coating off to the side in preparation for laying the next row of fabric. You may use the red overlap line on the fabric roll as a guide and overlap its entire length. (Note: Overlapping CRF may show a slight bump. You may also apply CRF side by side to avoid the bump. Do not line up fabric seams with plywood seams.) Repeat this process until the entire surface is completely covered with fabric. Allow to dry completely 24 to 48 hours.
Step four – To complete the application apply an additional 1-2 coats of Ames® Elasto-Barrier® over the deck to completely seal and fill all remaining pinhole openings in the fabric. Allow drying between coats (minimum of 24 hours). The coating is best applied by pouring it out in small quantities and spreading. The goal here is to have all pinholes filled and no less than 30 mils of thickness (about the thickness of a dime). Allow the product to completely dry until complete adhesion has occurred. Again, we recommend a minimum of 24 hours drying time between coats.
Step five – Topcoat with two coats of Ames’® Safe-T-Deck® granulated skid resistant deck coating in a color of your choice. Allow proper drying between coats (minimum of 24 hours drying time between coats).
Exterior Concrete Decks, Roof Decks, Balconies, and Walkways:
Should be wire brushed and power-washed. In certain situations, such as concrete decks or walkways, a shot-blaster may be needed to roughen the surface. Vacuum away and/or powerwash away any excess dust or debris and make sure the surface is completely dry before proceeding. Read all label instructions before beginning. Always run a test patch first in an inconspicuous area to ensure that proper adhesion and drying occurs and the product works to your satisfaction. Apply one coat of Ames® Super Primer™ (at the rate of 1 gal. / 200 sq ft. per coat) to help fill in cracks and increase adhesion to concrete. It will go on milky white and will dry completely clear in about 30 min. to an hour or so. It leaves a clear, slightly tacky surface that is ideal for coating. If surface is leaking, then apply a minimum of 2-3 coats of Ames® Elasto-Barrier® and allow proper drying between coats (2-3 gallons per 100 sq. ft. at the application rate of 1 gal. per 100 sq. ft. per coat). Then top coat with 2 coats of Ames® Safe-T-Deck® granulated skid resistant deck coating. We recommend a minimum of 24 hours drying time between coats. If the surface is not leaking, the Ames® Elasto-Barrier® is optional.
For Ames® Safe-T-Deck® skid resistant deck paint, the application coverage rate is one gallon per 100 sq. ft. per coat. Rough surfaces may require additional coating. All concrete surfaces require one coat of Ames® Super Primer™ to prime the surface first. All decks will need a minimum of two coats of Safe-T-Deck® (2 gal per 100 sq. ft.). All decks or roof decks that are leaking without roof fabric will need a minimum of 2-3 coats of Ames® Elasto-Barrier® based on 1 gal. per 100 sq. ft. per coat (3-4 gal. per 100 sq. ft.) Then top coat with two coats of Safe-T-Deck® skid resistant paint.
Weather & Drying Guidelines:
Ames® Safe-T-Deck® is best applied between 50° to 90° F (10° to 32° C) on warm dry surfaces. Apply when the streets are dry, the sun is in the sky and no inclement weather is forecast. Starts to dry in 2-8 hours, we recommend a minimum of 24 hours between coats with no rain or freezing temperatures. Depending on thickness of application and weather; dries in approximately 24 hours. Low temperatures, high humidity and evening and morning dew will require increased drying/curing time.
Durability and Longevity:
Longevity is dependent on how much foot traffic, furniture, and wear & tear the coated floor experiences. It is beneficial to coat the surface at approximately 5 to 10 years give or take with a maintenance coat. Unlike most other coatings out there, it is highly unlikely that Ames® Safe-T-Deck® will ever peel. Peeling is rare and only occurs from a substance that was delaminating from the surface before application.
Ames® Safe-T-Deck® Can be used in Conjunction with:
Ames® Super Primer®, Ames® Peel & Stick™ Seam Tape, Ames® Elasto-Barrier®, Ames® Contouring Roof Fabric™
Clean-up, Storage, and Disposal:
Clean tools and small spills with water only – do not use any soaps or detergents. Store unused product in its original container, tightly sealed and protected from freezing. Dispose of this slip-resistant base coat in accordance with local, state, or federal requirements.
