What is Ames® Liquid Granite®?

Ames® Liquid Granite® is a strong, water-based, liquid acrylic plastic, elastomeric coating fused with a multi-color blend of decorative chips. It seals and protects by substantially increasing the strength of the surface through adhesion. The resulting finish is a beautiful seamless floor or wall with a semi-gloss ‘granite-like’ appearance that is waterproof and slip-resistant. Both professional and DIY painters can restore old and worn surfaces to a new, better-looking, marble-style surface with Liquid Granite.

Liquid Granite® is a high-performance architectural coating ideal for concrete floors, porches, patios, walkways, stairways, wheelchair ramps, decks, roof decks, basement walls, and laundries. It has many other decorative applications on concrete, metal, and wood that is only limited by your imagination.

Liquid Granite® is a one-component, strong resurfacer which may be applied to most any shape or contour using a trowel or squeegee. It has excellent adhesion and bonds permanently to most types of sound substrate including wood, concrete, metal, asphalt, and fiberglass. Liquid Granite® fills small cracks and imperfections in concrete floors and walls. It penetrates, seals, and reinforces concrete floors and helps restore eroded concrete. It provides a waterproof, slip-resistant surface that is extremely durable and easy to clean.

Applying Liquid Granite® is a creative process. Application rate and method will vary depending upon the condition and type of surface. Some surfaces may require priming with Ames® Super Primer™, Elasto-Barrier®, or Blue Max® Trowel Grade.

General Application:

Do-It-Yourself in 3 Easy Steps

1. Surface Preparation
Be sure that surfaces are clean and dry before the coating application. Read all label instructions before beginning. Caulk all cracks greater than 1/8″ wide with Ames® Blue Max® Trowel Grade. Install adequate drains to drain flat roofs. Shot blast concrete in severe situations as needed. Always run a test patch first in an inconspicuous area. This is to ensure that there is proper adhesion and drying, and that the product performs to your satisfaction.
Moisture content of substrate must be less than 12%.

2. Prime and Seam Tape

Concrete surfaces must be primed with Ames® Super Primer™. Some surfaces may require priming with both Ames® Super Primer™ and Ames® Elasto-Barrier® for stronger waterproofing. Next, apply Ames® Peel & Stick™ Seam Tape to any seams, penetrations, vents, joints, cracks, flashings, vents, parapet wall flashings or where two unlike surfaces come together to provide some additional strength and reinforcement on these surfaces. (See Seam Tape label for instructions.)

3. Topcoat with Liquid Granite®

Apply Liquid Granite® to the surface. We recommend 1 to 2 coats of Liquid Granite® as needed to properly seal the surface for a watertight system. A trowel and brush works best when applying Liquid Granite®.

Application by Surface type:

Horizontal / Flat Surface:

Pour 1 to 2 quarts of the product onto the surface to be coated. We recommend working in small manageable increments roughly 2 feet wide by 6 feet long. Decrease this area if you are working in direct sunlight on a warm day as the coating will dry faster. Spread the Liquid Granite® evenly with a 3″ to 4″ wide paint brush or float it out with an 8” to 12″ plastic squeegee applicator tool. After a uniform coating has been applied you can smooth out the surface with a large cement trowel. You may also sprinkle a little water on the Liquid Granite® or wet your trowel to help create a smoother finish. Repeat this process until the desired area is completed and let it cure. A second coat may be required depending on application thickness and uniformity.

Vertical Surfaces:

Liquid Granite® may be applied to a vertical surface using a large trowel as you would apply stucco to a wall. You may use a drywall mud taping knife. Repeat this process until the desired area is completed and let it cure. A second coat may be required depending on application thickness and uniformity. Tip: Apply a light initial coat to provide “traction” for a second coat.

Wood Decks:

Sand or wire brush any areas that have loose material or are dirty. Prime as much of the wood surface as possible with Ames® Elasto-Barrier® liquid rubber primer and sealer. On new deck construction, when possible, apply Ames’® Elasto-Barrier® to all surfaces, sides and ends of the wood before constructing deck. Allow to dry. Topcoat with one or more coats of Liquid Granite® and allow proper drying between coats.

Plywood (Decks and Ramps):

Seam tape and seal all seams, joints, flashings or drip edges with Ames® Elasto-Barrier® and Ames® Peal & Stick™ Seam Tape. For outdoor use, plywood should be at least 3/4-inch thick. Prime entire surface with one or more coats of Ames® Elasto-Barrier® and allow to dry. On new deck construction, apply Ames® Elasto-Barrier® to all surfaces, sides and ends of the board before constructing deck. Ames® Contouring Roof Fabric™ (CRF-250) is generally used in roof deck applications. Topcoat with one or more coats of Liquid Granite®.

Concrete Surfaces

Concrete surfaces should be wire brushed or pressure washed to remove any loose dirt or debris. Do not apply Liquid Granite® over damp or severely decomposing concrete. Repair the concrete and allow to cure for up to 30 days prior to application of Liquid Granite®. Concrete should be approximately 6 inches above ground water. Apply Ames® Super Primer™, then topcoat with one or more coats of Ames® Liquid Granite®. Areas where standing water may occur may require annual maintenance or cleaning. Some surfaces may require maintenance because of potentially severe weather conditions or excessive wear and tear. Other surfaces may require priming with Ames® Elasto-Barrier®. For roof deck applications see our roof deck specifications.

Liquid Granite may require one or more of the following: 3-4 inch paint brush, Seam Tape, trowel, Scissors, texture sprayer

Estimated Coverage:

Standard product coverage is approximately five gallons per 70-100 sq. feet per coat. Rough surfaces may require additional coating. Most surfaces will only require one coat. A second coat may be required in some applications.

Weather & Drying Guidelines:

For exterior applications Liquid Granite® is best applied between 50° to 90° F (10° to 32° C) on warm dry surfaces. Apply when the streets are dry, the sun is in the sky and no inclement weather is forecast. Starts to dry in 2-8 hours, depending on thickness of application and weather; cures in 24 hours. Low temperatures, high humidity and evening and morning dew will require increased drying/curing time.

Clean-up, Storage, and Disposal:

Clean tools and small spills with water. Store unused product in its original container, tightly sealed and protected from freezing. Dispose of this product in accordance with local, state, or federal requirements.

This stuff has been a godsend we have a roof deck over a kitchen addition and it has held up in ND for now going on 8 years and no leaks.

I have a 1200 sq ft courtyard that I use to entertain. I had to treat this as both a floor and a roof deck because I have a garage below it. A professional suggested I use polyaspartic, however soon after he applied it, it started to crack, peel, we had bubbles everywhere, it scratched easily, it was super slippery when wet, and super hot in the sun, and the worst part was that it was leaking in my garage in 5 different places.

I got half my money back, and that was my budget, so after researching 2 months for solutions, I found Ames Research site. I ordered the products and I, a 5 foot 2 inch woman, stripped the polyaspartic with a diamond grinder and applied the Elasto Barrier, the fabric, the primer, and liquid granite.

We are so pleased with this product, after almost 3 years, it looks amazing. I have power washed it and it hasn’t peeled, chipped or anything. I have furniture that I move around, no scratches can be seen.

We live in Pennsylvania and have rough winters, and it rains a lot , it is water tight, not one single drop in my garage. It isn’t slippery at all, nor has it cracked from the freeze and thaw.

I chose the Shoreline color which is light, so during the summer the sun beats on it all day long, I can walk on it bare foot and it is not hot, it just feels warm, it hasn’t even peeled or changed color from the UV rays. It can be a bit bright when the sun is beating on it, but I have a sectional and a dinner table that breaks it up a bit.

The best advice I can give is, USE a trowel. I thought I could roll it on to save some time and it didn’t look right, it separated and formed divets. The good news is that fixing it was easy too. I added some from a different bucket and it blended right in, you can’t even tell where I applied more product. I was even able to make it thicker in some areas by adding a couple of coats to grade it better towards my drains.

Its resistant to stains too, during the fall lots of leaves come down, and if it rains they get wet and sometimes stick to the floor, we either hose it off, or power wash it and it comes right out. I have kids that ride their bikes, big wheels and other wheel toys on it and nothing; no scratches or rubber marks, it truly is an amazing product.

These products are also very easy to apply, l had a lot of different layers to apply, but it truly was easy.

Thank you so much Ames, I don’t know what I would have done without your products.

Thank You for a Wonderful Product. Wanted to thank you folks for your wonderful product. My wife installed your weather proof deck material seven years ago. She installed it by herself, the coatings, fabric and the top liquid granite, two coats. We just bought 8 five gallon pails of the liquid granite and applied it over this seven year deck these past three days. We have three fourths of a pail left over for any touch up in the future. It troweled on perfectly. We got up at sunrise and worked until it got to hot, about 10 AM. We have no complaints, it smoothed out over the high spots and filled in the low spots. Dried to the touch in about 30 minutes. Color between pails is consistent. We will tell all our friends, family and neighbors about this great product. Thank you Tracy for all you help and service. Continue on, have a great summer.
