Do-It-Yourself in Three Easy Steps:

1. Clean and Prepare the Roof: Read all label instructions before beginning. Always run a test patch first in an inconspicuous area, to ensure that proper adhesion and drying occurs and the product works to your satisfaction. Be sure surfaces are clean and dry before the coating application. Mask all sensitive areas before starting.

2. Seam Tape & Prime the Roof Surface: Prime the surface until it is smooth and sealed. Surfaces with joints, cracks, flashings, vents, parapet wall flashings or where two unlike surfaces come together, require Ames Peel & Stick™ Seam Tape (PS250, PS450, PS650) to provide some additional strength and reinforcement. For standing water situations we recommend priming with Ames’® Elasto-Barrier®, dual rubber coating.

3. Pour It Out & Paint It On:
Good: 1-2 coats of Ames® Iron Coat®.
Better: 1 coat of Ames® Elasto-Barrier® or Iron Coat® and 2 coats of Iron Coat® or similar Ames® Product.
Best: 2 coat of Ames® Elasto-Barrier®; top with 2-3 coats of Ames® Iron Coat® or similar Ames’® product.

Weather & Drying Guidelines:
Best results when applied between 40 to 90 degrees F on warm dry surfaces. Apply when the streets are dry, the sun is in the sky and no inclement weather is forecast. Dries in 1-2 hours, depending on thickness of application and weather; cures in 24 hours. Low temperatures, high humidity and evening and morning dew will require increased drying/curing time.

Estimated Coverage:
Standard product coverage on a smooth surface is 100 sq. ft. per gallon per coat. Rough or uneven surfaces may require additional product. More than one coat is recommended. More coats equal longer life.

3 reviews for Ames’® Iron Coat® Metal Roof Paint

  1. Kodiak V.

We had tried many different roof coatings for metal roofs on mobile homes and had no luck. Since using iron coat we have been successful in sealing roofs by spraying the material on in two coats and stopping leaks we could never stop and in some cases never find before.

  2. Nicole M

Great product. I used Iron Coat on my mobile home roof. It stopped all the leaks and cooled down my house. Thank you.

  3. Terry L

We recently ordered and applied your Iron Coat product to our 2,000 square foot metal building that is being used as our community food pantry and temporary offices for our home for abused and neglected children.

We are more than pleased with the results. The building had developed many small leaks in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. The Iron Coat treatment was easy to apply and we were able to place two+ coatings on the roof in one day.

The results were immediate. Our leaks have all stopped and the reflective quality of the paint is terrific. We have not had to use our AC yet and the temperature inside of the building has remained 20 to 30 cooler than normal.

Additionally, I would like to thank you for your generous donation of the seam tape and the reduction of the price for the Iron Coat.

Ames, you not only have a good product, you have good hearts.
